Subject: Franey Mansion in Shenandoah

Hi! In case you didn't know....the building where your family lived on Coal and Jardin St. in Shenandoah was on fire last nite along with the surrounding houses.
Years ago, I found your story on the internet while researching Shenandoah and thought of it every time I drove by.
I was born and raised in town and still live very close in the town of Frackville. Sorry for the bad news.
You can check out
www.republicanherald.com for the story. There is only a brief one today but I'm sure a bigger article will be in tomorrow.

Subject: Franey Manson, damaged by fire 2/23/13

Hello, My name is Suzie Witcoski Drake. I was born and raised in Shenandoah at 108 West Penn Street. That is the alley parallel to Coal Street.
It is 1 block away from the Franey Manson. I'm not sure if anyone has brought to your attention that the Franey Manson was damaged by a fire yesterday.
I now live in Red Hill, 15mins. from Quakertown but my family still lives in Shenandoah and I was saddened to learn this.
I often played by this mansion and grew up with Tony Meirnickie. The son of the Mr. Meirnickie, the lawyer, who owned the Franey Mansion when I was growing up. I'm not sure I have the spelling of the Meirnickie name correct.

As a result of the building being on fire yesterday, I learned from postings on Facebook of it's history. I never knew it was the Franey Mansion, the history of your family, or even that the Dorsey home was right next door on Coal Street.
So sad how you learn things sometimes.
Anyway, I wanted to share this with you knowing it is a huge piece of family history for you.

Kindest regards,

Mrs. Drake

Jeff,
I ran across your wonderful family research on the Shenandoah Memories site. You are so lucky to have so much preserved. I did not get interested in my family history until later in life after my parents had already passed away. One of the things I did know was that my mother worked in a funeral home. Today when I was speaking to my aunt, the only living relative of that generation, she mentioned the Franey Funeral Home. My mother, Dorothy Malinowski, had to leave school and go to work at a young age to help support her family. She did not have an easy life and did not speak much of her youth. I'm not sure how long she worked for your family but I know that she did travel to Atlantic City with them. She was born in 1916, so I would think this would be in the 1930's? I remember her being uncomfortable working in a funeral parlor and all her life she did not like the smell of gladiolas! She also told me that one time she walked into a viewing room to find the owner "trying out" a casket. In 1937 she married my father, Joseph Nowacoski and eventually they moved to Brooklyn, NY.
I doubt that you would have any records of my mom working for your family but you never know unless you ask.

Best, Mary Anne

I so much enjoyed reading your family history. I was just googling "Shendo" when I came across it. My father was from Shenandoah , his name was Patrick J. Hand, M.D., also a graduate of Penn Medicine. He practiced in Darby at the old Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital and had his office and our home in Glenolden , Delaware County. He died at age 48 in 1957 while vacationing in Avalon NJ. His brother , my uncle Bill Hand , married to Agnes, lived all his life and died in Shenandoah c. 1968. They lived at 8 S. Bower St. the house where my father was born. Uncle Bill was a milkman, delivering in Shenandoah. I have a fond memory of going with him on his rounds several times while visiting.
I remember the funeral of my great-aunt, Margaret R. Hand, at the Franey funeral home in 1961. She lived with us in Glenolden, being the last of her generation, after she moved o/o Shenandoah in 1947 or so.
My grand parents were James and Ellen Hand. My grandmother's maiden name was Reilly and she was from Pottsville. They were both deceased at the time of my birth in 1948.

I find your family tie to author John O'Hara very cool. A few years ago , my wife and I visited Pottsville to tour the Yuengling brewery. We parked on Mahantongo street. When I got o/o the car, I noted that the author grew up on same street. When I looked around we wher parked in front of his boyhood home!!!

Also, I note the group picture taken in a bar celebrating the end of WW2, included is Dr, Emmett Hobbs. I recall my parents referring to a Dr. Joseph Hobbs o/o Shenandosh or Pottsville??

I hope this finds you well and I extendgood wishes to you and all your family.|

Mr Stoffa,

I really enjoyed reading of you family's history in Shenandoah.
My grandparents lived at the corner of Coal and Jardin Streets for a time while I was in high
school, at J. W. Cooper. My uncle, Joseph Marone, was a Mayor of Shenandoah.

My grandparents belonged to St. George's Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

I have a copy of each of the Only Western Town in the East books, one of them autographed.

I was a teacher at Emmaus High School and had the opportunity to speak to Mr. Gallagher
when he visited the school in 1985 to speak to Social Studies classes. It was a pleasure to meet him and talk about life in the coal regions.

Thank for the memories about our past history.

Dear Mr. Stoffa,
I loved reading about the Franey family. It was very interesting. On a whim my husband, Joe Corrigan, decided to look up history on Shenandoah PA, where his father grew up as a boy, and found your story about the "Franey" family.
The Franey's lived 2 blocks from Chestnut st, where my husband's father -The Corrigan's- lived.
My husband's aunt, Mary Corrigan (his father's sister), married Michael Sullivan.
As you already wrote Michael Sullivan purchased the Franey Funeral Home in the 1960s from Jim Franey (129 N. Jardin).
Do you know if your family knew the Corrigan family , Mary Corrigan or Thomas Corrigan that lived on Chestnut st? I feel silly asking, but I figured it cant hurt, ha.

Sincerely, Claire Corrigan

Subject: Jeff Stoffa: Franeys and Fergusons

Dear Mr. Stoffa,
Your extensive family history page came up as I was searching for some pictures of Shenandoah, where I was born. I was looking for a picture of the town. As my grandparents (Daniel J. & Johanna Ferguson) were neighbors (cousins?) of yours, their house at 33 South White Street came up, crystal clear.

I was looking for some information for my daughter, 7, for a project for school. She was delighted with the house and wanted no more. I however, returned and found not only the Fergusons but a picture of my uncle, Frank Tamulonis and his wife, Cis Hoffman.

What a small world. I wanted to thank you for putting together such an extensive and informative family page.

You did not invite comments but with so many connections, I could not resist.
My father was one of Frank's younger brothers, Clarence (Rams), who married Patricia Ferguson, who grew up in the house on 33 South White. For a time we lived in on Jardin Street in a tumbling down house but when my father got a job at ALCOA in Cressona, we moved to Pottsville. I was born in 1953 at Locust Mountain Hospital.

Best regards to you and congratulations for keeping your family so beautifully alive.
Those are stunning pictures.

Sincerely,

Daniel Fergus Tamulonis
